Maryland is full of fascinating history and we're always learning something new. For example, did you know about this little park that used to be a deadly dueling ground? You can still visit this spot today. Read on for the details and if you're ever in the Bladensburg area, swing by and take a stroll among history.
What appears to be an ordinary patch of grass in Colmar Manor, is actually an infamous spot where bloody duels once took place. During the s and maybe even dating back to the mids , many men came here to settle their disputes to the death. Because this patch of land is just over the DC line, there was no chance of Washington police interfering. Around 50 known duels took place, but the numbers could be much higher.
From politicians to military officers, dozens of men were gravely injured at this very spot. In fact, because of its deadly reputation, the creek here used to be known as Blood Run.
If you're ever in the area, be sure to swing by for a bit and read up on the history of this interesting and little known spot. Did you know about the Bladensburg Dueling Grounds? The Gemmies are a collection of destinations that are a true representation of their state. To experience these gems is to know the heartbeat of their American locations and we think they are all worthy of a visit. You'll find Apostle Islands National Lakeshore lining the outline of the Bayfield Peninsula in far northern Wisconsin, stretching its smattering of islands out into the open waters of Lake Superior. While the park is best known for its eponymous islands, it also has much to offer the mainland visitor who cares to explore its nooks and crannies - particularly on peninsula's northwestern shore.
