Several retailers in the Portland-metro area are opening their doors at midnight to sell the console. At the Best Buy in Clackamas, we're told upward of people have already begun to line up. Nintendo's latest console is arriving to much higher anticipation and fanfare than the company's last machine, the Wii U, which consistently ran a distant, distant third behind the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in sales despite a one-year head start on the market.
It's also launching alongside "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," which has been universally praised by the gaming press since review embargoes lifted early Thursday. Nintendo's last stab at a hardware release was the NES Classic, a miniature recreation of the Nintendo Entertainment System loaded with 30 games. The tiny console was a rarity on store shelves through the holidays and remains elusive even now.
And a Target spokesperson said the retailer will have units in-store and online available for order Friday. Standalone GameStop stores across the state will also have units for walk-ins and are all opening at midnight for the console's launch.
Walmart, Target and Fred Meyer stores will not be open at midnight to sell the console, although they will all have extra stock for walk-in customers Friday morning.
