I was listening to a podcast and they referenced a girl who was an escort and became a prostitute. I had thought they were essentially the same thing with an escort just being a guise for them to be able to advertise themselves to some degree legally.

This is my thought. So basically, is it that an escort gets incrementally more dignity in at least doing something social in public with the guy before sex and that with a prostitute the guy just shows up at her hotel room, they bang, and he's gone in 20 minutes?

The escort services provide a menu but anything off menu is an understood extra to be provided off record, whereas the independents usually give you a blanket per hour price and the "time" is paid up front and whatever two consenting adults decide to do during that time is up to them.
