Alpine Angler. Hi Guys and Gals, I've never done any welding and was wondering what kind of welder I should get and learn to use. I'll be using it to weld up billets, welding a rod to the billets for forging and general projects around the house. I know there are arc, mig and tig welders.
But I don't know which to get. Thanks for any and all help. A little v buzz box will probably do all you need it to do. Find all posts by Recurve. Ed Caffrey. I think that MIG has the shortest learning curve The "buzz boxes" that Jim spoke about are a cheaper alternative, but the learning curving is dramatically longer.
I still own one of the old Lincoln "buzz boxes" that I purchased at a ranch auction nearly 20 years ago For a welder that your not going to do heavy welding with, and is easy to learn, I would recommend something like a Lincoln Weld-Pak The Hobart Handler welders are not bad, although I have heard of a number of problems with recent year models.
For something that is plain inexpensive at least for a welder you can't beat the good old "buzz boxes". NET Caffreyknives gmail. Find all posts by Ed Caffrey. Ray Rogers.
I use my welder exactly as and for the purposes you specified. It's a Miller V arc welder buzz box. The learning curve wasn't too bad - a day or two - for my purposes.
