The former monastery church of St. Peter and Paul is one of the most important Romanesque church buildings in Thuringia, despite considerable alterations to its substance in the 19th century. As the spiritual center of St. Peter's Monastery, which occupied an outstanding position among the Thuringian monasteries, it shaped the silhouette of the city of Erfurt for centuries.
The monastery suffered serious destruction during the Napoleonic Wars. As a result, the monastery church was dismantled and used as a storehouse for provisions.
Peter's Church was partially renovated for BUGA and is now once again an important focal point on the Petersberg.
