In Germany, you walk up to someone and ask where something is, and they are very nice and show you on the map where it is and give you some directions. Pro tip: if a German stops and asks you how are doing, they mean it. Be honest. Be blunt. It focuses on grammar and language usage. We did a lot of group and partner work, played some games, did a lot of speaking exercises, and learned a lot of vocab. A lot of the things we did had practical uses in my everyday life here. Excursions: None. But my professor did organize some meet ups, like a hiking excursion and a meet up at a park for a picnic.
Workload: Almost everyday there was a short worksheet to do. We had one presentation on a topic of your choosing. We had one long reading comprehension and response. We had one oral exam that was very relaxed and very easily done if you attended classes or speak German on a semi-regular basis. At the end we had one test that was extremely fair in what we learned.
We were her first class, but she was very clear and easy to understand. She was very approachable and answered any questions. She explained things in a way that was easily understood but also simple. Description: In this class you learn a history of Freiburg and the surrounding Baden-Wurttemberg and Elsass region. This class is mainly a history course in the first half, and a culture course in the second.
Workload: One test after the first half and one test after the second half. One 10 minute long presentation. Some homework here and there, reading or research. The Professor: She is the worst. She is from this region and speaks in the dialect. She will not speak slower no matter how many times you ask.
She will not write that word on the board. The tests ask VERY specific questions. She gave a fairly nice grade on the referat, but during it, she will tear you apart. She is not understanding at all if issues come up or you ask to make an exception for you. She also teachers the theater class, and interrupts monologues and made two girls cry this semester.
