I've looked through every setting possible on the TP Link router looking for something that might be blocking the traffic coming in on the WAN port destined for a LAN device, but I don't see anything.
It does so by default, and it might not even be a setting β the "home wifi" style routers have the assumption that the 'WAN' port means "the wide Internet" baked into them, therefore blocking all "WAN" traffic except what is specifically allowed. I don't actually know what TP-Link firmwares look like these days, but sometimes there will be a "Disable firewall" or "Disable stateful packet inspection" switch.
Sometimes there will be a list of firewall rules, where you can add the kinds of traffic you need to allow Not to be confused with 'port forwarding' rules!
Sometimes you just can't turn it off at all. There certainly are home wireless routers running firmwares that are flexible enough β no reason they couldn't be β but it's very hit-or-miss as to what kind you get. Mikrotik RouterOS-based devices can likewise be easily made to route in any direction. I don't know if the EdgeRouter line still exists, but ER-X used to be a decent "generic" device in the past.
