ABC North Qld. Topic: Weather Forecasts. Communities north of Townsville are on flood watch. Heavy rainfall in Far North Queensland has led to evacuations and rescues in Gordonvale.
A flood watch remains in place for communities north of Townsville. The Bureau of Meteorology is continuing to monitor two potential low pressure systems near Queensland, as well as a monsoon. A "pocket of heavy rain" could hit communities across parts of the Burdekin, around Bowen and the Whitsundays on Wednesday night, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
It comes after two people were rescued from flooded homes south of Cairns on Wednesday. Patch Clapp from the Bureau of Meteorology said areas affected by floods could expect rain to ease over the next 24 hours. Mr Clapp said a surface low north of Cairns and a deepening trough near the North Tropical Coast were pushing moisture and rain onshore.
Floodwater has cut the Bruce Highway between Cardwell and Ingham with police urging drivers not to risk their lives on flooded roads. A Gordonvale resident, south of Cairns, was rescued from their home on Wednesday. The area had received millimetres of rain between 9am and Wednesday afternoon. Queensland Fire Department and State Emergency Service personnel used boats to reach another elderly resident. The localised flooding was a heartbreaking blow for Klarwein Close residents Kimberley Hodges and Mark Orrell, whose home was inundated for a second time in two summers.
It had only just been repaired after sustaining serious damage during the floods of December Mark Orrell and Kimberley Hodges' home in Gordonvale has flooded a second time. Mr Orrell said they would need to "scrounge enough money to process another insurance claim and start the whole process from scratch". A severe weather warning for heavy rainfall on the north tropical coast was cancelled just before 5pm.
