It discusses the theological justifications for the existence of prostitution as a necessary means to curb lust, reflecting broader societal beliefs about sexuality and women's roles.
By analyzing historical texts and the concept of 'conjugal debt', the paper sheds light on the complex interplay between gender, morality, and social order during this period. This came about by a long process. In the twelfth century municipal Leonese and Castilian legal codes already contained some norms on prostitution and procuring. An important reason for the increasing preoccupation in prostitution seems to have been the tremendous rise in the number of people involved in the trade: harlots as well as bawds and pimps.
