It emphasizes the importance of an independent and pluralistic press as vital for democracy, drawing on historical events and ongoing challenges faced by journalists across the continent.
The text also highlights international support needed to develop media frameworks that enable freedom of expression and protect journalists from repression. It has become a pattern to find academics, professionals and students of journalism bragging with the scope, techniques and dilemmas of investigative journalism. But there is one gaping hole: nowhere was information collated about the heroic contributions, and often the sacrifices, that were made for the profession by African investigative journalists across Africa.
Writing a history or complete account of African investigative journalism is outside the scope of this issue and the journal. This issue comes in parallel with the aims of the UNESCO to encourage new academic research in this important area that until present has been covered only by a scarce amount of scientifically oriented studies.
Political Communication in Africa Springer, Cham , The chapter argues that the bleak picture of the continent that the African media peddles through its overwhelming emphasis on negative news and subjective reportage of the activities of African governments to its national and international publics serve largely to water the seeds of internal discord and Afro-pessimism.
It can therefore be argued that the African mass media has continued to contribute to the pessimistic imaging of Africa through its one-sided reportage of the continent. Many East African states have developed restrictive legal and policy measures regarding the use of the internet. This has resulted in the declining state of media freedom and safety of journalists.
