Supporters of Borussia Monchengladbach will make a huge donation of almost scarves to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. Liverpool will hold a special memorial service on April 15 and recently launched a campaign to commemorate the 96 supporters who tragically lost their lives in Fans, clubs and institutions from all sports were asked to submit a scarf, with all of which set to be laid on the Anfield pitch in the shape of the number '96'.
The two sides have held a positive relationship with Gladbach since the UEFA Cup final, before clashing again in the Reds' memorable European Cup triumph four years later. And the German outfit decided to make their own special donation by organising a collection during their recent Bundesliga match with Hamburg, receiving close to scarves. Thousands of donations have already been made, with many carrying poignant messages of remembrance and support to the Hillsborough families.
The club recently confirmed their official charity, the Liverpool FC Foundation, will donate all scarves to local good causes, including homeless charities, along with items of Anfield memorabilia. There are still three days remaining for scarves to be submitted; to ensure they will be displayed on the pitch, with a deadline of Tuesday April 8. Meanwhile, the anniversary of the disaster will also be honoured by late-kick offs across all professional football matches in the UK.
